From Ljubljana, Slovenia we picked up a rent-a-car and headed toward Istria to drink wine and eat truffles.
Our plan was to spend about two and 1/2 weeks in Istria and we split our time into four homebases to mix it up a bit and shorten drives. (not really necessary, as with a car distances are all manageable, but we were glad did). We homebased first in Novigrad, (north of Istria), Porec, (center west coast), Rovinj, (also center west, but too nice not to spend a couple of nights) and then Opatija, south east coast)
We saw an post on this small off the beaten track church on Atlas Obscura and since the Dancse Macabre is one of my favorite classical pieces, we made it a mission to find it
12th Century Holy Trinity Church, Hrastovlje, Slovenia
The walls of this medieval church are covered with perfectly preserved frescos from 1490 (hidden under plaster until 1949), including a pristine example of the Dance of Death
Danse Macabre
We were the only people in this small little church and played Dance of the Dead Opera 40 from our phone, very cool moment

Italian adventurer and writer Giacomo Casanova visited Vrsar on two occasions (1743 and 1744), which he mentioned in his famous memoirs.
