Amazon, Ecuador

From Quito, Ecuador we flew 30 minutes to Coca, a small city on outskirts of the Ecuadorian Amazon. From there, we took a two hour motor boat ride, a 1 mile walk, and then a 30 minute canoe ride to our jungle accommodations

Before heading out on our two hour motor boat ride to our accommodations, we stopped in the local jungle pharmacy market. We tried various products related to energy drinks, pain, medicine, etc.

Open air dining market, where all the kitchens pretty much look the same, noticed the grubs on a skewer, a local delicacy

Two hour boat ride

30 minute canoe ride

Finally, after checking in, our walk to our cabin. The lodge provided us with rubber boots and ponchos for our visit.

Squirrel monkey’s greeted us at the lodge

Locally, called a turkey bird

Our hostess and her son

We were served a snack of plantains cassava and grubs if we wanted them

We both got to try a blow dart

Our efforts

Fishing for piranhas

Giant river otters playing at around the lake where we stayed

We saw this butterfly that has beautiful blue effervescent, open wings. It was so fast. I never got a picture of it flying that was clear, but I’ll post one of my efforts below.

About an 8 foot Cayman

Several canoe rides to get to tree platforms and treetop bridges

Had to take long hikes, sometimes through the mud, to get to where we were going

Added at least 20 new birds to my life list, here’s a sample

The snail was about the size of my hand

It was pretty dark under the canopy so this picture is not very good but I thought the four night monkeys were pretty cute

Again, not a great picture in the dark canopy of the jungle, but I thought these two crested owls were pretty cool

Cayman lizard

Butterfly

The guy in the foreground was screaming that he wanted the fish

He stole it, and then the other guy was screaming to get it back😀

A treehouse platform

On our last night, Charlotte decided to dip her toes into the Amazon, its double netted to keep out the piranhas
