Bishkek Outskirts, Kyrgyzstan

Our last few days in the Kyrgyz Republic tomorrow we head to Kazakhstan. We’ve experienced mountains, lakes, cities, traditional villages, cultural experiences, historic sites, and plenty of long, bumpy roads! It’s been full of surprises and adventures

Kyrgyz horse games, where riding skills, strength, speed, and horsemanship are put on full display. They reflect a way of life that has been passed down through generations. This rider was trying to grab markers from the ground while speeding along on his horse

Horses are woven into the country’s history, culture, and identity. Here two boys wrestle using the horses and their bodies until one drops off (or rather, gets pulled off)

Dungan Mosque in Karakol—a remarkable piece of Kyrgyzstan’s multicultural history. Built in the early 20th century by Dungan Muslims, descendants of Chinese Muslims who migrated to Central Asia in the 1800s. Its colorful wooden architecture blends Chinese traditions with Islamic design, making it unlike any other mosque we’ve seen. - ChatGPT

Petroglyphs Museum near Cholpon-Ata, where thousands of images were carved into the rocks over the course of more than 3,000 years. Some date back to the 2nd millennium BC, with many others created during the Saka and later Turkic periods

Museum of Nikolay Przhevalsky, a 19th-century explorer of Central Asia who was of Polish ancestry but served the Russian Empire

His expeditions took him through some of the least-known parts of Central Asia at the time, mapping territory and documenting its people, wildlife, and landscapes

“Kardashian sheep" is an internet nickname for fat-tailed sheep breeds found across Central Asia. They feature a massive, cushion-like rear end that can weigh up to 15 kg and sways side to side when they walk. The heavy tail works like a camel hump, storing vital fat and energy to help the animal survive cold winters and dry seasons. The fatty deposit is a prized delicacy in regional cooking and forms a central component of traditional dishes across Uzbekistan and neighboring areas.

We had a 45 min very bumpy ride on the back of this horse cart to watch the games

Enjoyed a few days on Lake Issyk-Kul. It’s the largest lake in Kyrgyzstan and the second-largest alpine lake in the world

It's cold

Rukh Ordo, on the shores of Issyk-Kul, was created by Kyrgyz businessman and philanthropist Tashkul Kereksizov as a place where cultures and religions could come together. The complex includes five chapels representing Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism, along with museums, art, sculpture and tributes to Kyrgyz culture

Up next; cab from Bishkek Kyrgyzstan to border, walk, walk, than cab to Almaty Kazakstan
